Like many other industries in Canada, the tourism and hospitality sector has begun to experience labour shortages.  Retiring ‘baby boomers’ and the shrinking pool of youth entering the labour force will increasingly affect the ability of Canadian businesses to remain competitive. Tourism and hospitality has historically faced labour challenges, and as competition increases for workers, and tourism continues to grow in Canada, it will become more and more challenging to have an adequate labour supply for this sector.  The Conference Board of Canada forecasts a shortfall across all business sectors of 364,000 workers by 2025.

As employers are struggling to find workers, they are tapping into temporary foreign workers to alleviate the impact that labour shortages are having on their business operations.

Although foreign workers are only one of several solutions to the tourism industry’s skilled employee shortages, they are definitely a part of it and, increasingly, a bigger part. With fewer Canadian workers and an almost endless supply of willing foreign workers from all over the world, Canadian employers will increasingly look outside Canada for temporary and permanent employees.
