Empowering Leadership Program

OTEC’s Empowering Leadership Training program is designed for tourism and hospitality sector managers and leaders seeking to improve leadership skills, empower their team, drive results, and champion growth.

Brought to us by OTEC and the Social Research & Demonstration Corporation (SRDC), this training features a flexible, blended learning curriculum that is tailored for two distinct tiers of leaders described below. This is a continuation of an SRDC project examining the implementation of the updated Skills for Success model.

In this new program, employees will gain vital leadership skills, while businesses will discover strategies to help them implement their new knowledge into daily operations, ensuring lasting results and practical application of their skills – far beyond what typical training programs offer.

Tier 1: Leadership Essentials

Intended for: High potential employees, frontline workers, aspiring leaders, new supervisors, junior leaders.

Course Details:

  • 45-minute self-directed and flexible eLearning module
  • 3-hour instructor-led virtual workshop

Tier 2: Leadership Champions

Intended for: Executives, HR staff, People Ops, Senior Leaders, Owners, CEOs

Course Details:

  • 20-minute reading activity
  • 2-hour instructor-led virtual workshop
  • 1-hour instructor-led debrief session

Project Background

OTEC’s Empowering Leadership Training aligns with Canada’s new Skills for Success Model and addresses evolving labour market needs and responds to a growing interest in social-emotional skills across industry sectors. OTEC adapted our leadership training to bring the Skills for Success model to life through customized training aligned with the skills development priorities of the tourism and hospitality sector.

The first phase of this project tested the practical application of the model with the tourism and hospitality sector and measured the social and emotional skills gain, learning transfer, and improvements in job performance as a result of the training. A 4-course Accelerated Leadership Training Series was offered at no cost to Ontario tourism and hospitality businesses throughout the project. The project leveraged Tourism SkillsNet Ontario to build awareness and disseminate project resources and learnings.
